For the past five decades, King Living has challenged the boundaries of what furniture can achieve. Known for Australian design, comfort engineering and continuous innovation, King Living has redefined the way a sofa adapts, performs and endures.

It started in a family home
King Living was founded in 1977, when David King and his mother Gwen began handcrafting original foam sofas from their family home.
They soon opened a stall at Sydney’s Paddy’s Markets, where demand for the modular designs quickly outgrew supply. By 1979, the Kings had moved manufacturing to Annandale and opened the flagship showroom on Parramatta Road.
The move brought David closer to his customers and gave him full control over quality. Annandale remains a design destination today.
A response to disposable furniture
In the late seventies, furniture sat broken and stacked on kerbsides across Sydney, destined for landfill.
A strained economy had pushed households towards the cheapest option, and the industry obliged. Sofas were built to a price, with softwood and particle board frames stapled and glued together, covered and sold. They were never made to last. Replacing a sofa every few years had become normal.
“I refused to accept it as inevitable,” David says. “Back then, I didn't know much about furniture, but I looked at the furniture that was discarded on the side of the road, and I learnt a lot.”
What David saw shaped a different approach. Rather than accept the throwaway culture, he set out to challenge the ordinary. Build it properly, from the inside out, and it could be kept, repaired and handed on. Buy once, buy well.
Nearly fifty years later, that thinking still drives everything King Living does.
Built on steel
The King reputation for quality is built on steel. The broken furniture on those kerbsides shared one flaw: timber frames that gave way.
“Because we make everything ourselves, I know exactly what’s inside every component of our designs. How it’s built and how it’s evolved. We design our furniture from the inside out, starting with a steel frame. This engineering ensures our furniture will last,” says David.
Today, the renowned King Steel Frame remains the foundation of every King Living design. Precision engineered from high-grade galvanised stainless steel, it delivers enduring comfort and performance, backed by the 25-year steel frame warranty.
Using the same steel suspension seen in luxury European cars, the Postureflex® Seating System works in unison with the King Steel Frame to provide lasting support. KingCell® high tensile compression springs keep every seat cushion consistent in firmness, holding its shape far longer than ordinary cushioning.

"We design our furniture to be flexible. If you move to a larger living space you don't have to buy new. King will adapt to your lifestyle. With ordinary furniture, you can't do this."

The sofa that revolutionised Australian living
In 1998, King Living introduced the Delta Sofa, changing what people believed furniture could do.
It arrived as Australians were moving towards inner-city living, trading spacious suburban homes for low-maintenance apartments closer to city jobs and a booming urban lifestyle. Furniture that was designed for large rooms no longer suited many people’s lifestyles.
"So we built a flexible sofa for the way people actually live,” explains David. “Not a fixed design, but one that could adapt to any space and evolve with whoever lived there."
The breakthrough was in the connection system.
Where other modular sofas moved only horizontally, Delta moved vertically too. Seats, backs, arms and accessories could be added and repositioned. The sofa even converted into a bed. That intelligent modularity revolutionised Australian furniture.
The response was immediate, then global.
By 2005, Delta had appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The following year, more than 90 modules travelled to Los Angeles for Vanity Fair's Oscar Party. After seating some of the world’s biggest stars, Delta made headlines of its own, with the event organiser declaring, “an Australian-made sofa became the star of the show.”
Nearly three decades on, the thinking still holds.
In 2026, Delta 5 launched, a reimagining of the original for the way we live now. The same modular flexibility, now with smarter accessories, a contemporary silhouette and more options to personalise the feel and comfort.
“We’ve been able to adapt over the last fifty years. Nothing ever stays the same, and you need to go with the change. The Delta today and the original look similar, but inside, the technology’s advanced. The foam. The methods. We evolve things.”
Delta 5 remains compatible with the very first designs, so Delta owners can add and modernise their sofa rather than replace it.
Replace the covers. Not the furniture.
King furniture is made to be lived on for generations, and real life leaves its mark. Every King Living sofa is designed with tailored removable covers for easy care and renewal.
"Removable covers allow you to update your furniture. Clean the covers, repair them, replace them. With other furniture you can't do that as easily. That's why King lasts longer and is less likely to end up in landfill,” says David.
But the removable cover began as a practical solution, not a grand plan. Originally making sofas by hand, David found that fabric couldn’t be stapled onto foam. So he tied the covers on with a draw cord instead. That single decision evolved into every cover being removable, and it was customers who revealed its value.
"We found out the power of it over the years when people would come back and say, 'Can we buy new covers for this?'" David says, “and we thought, "Oh, that's an idea, we can sell covers."
That same craft from the seventies shapes every cover today. Every King Living sofa passes through skilled hands. Makers who cut, sew and finish each design with their eyes on the detail, traditional methods working in step with advanced engineering.
"Our furniture is the combination of technology with craftsmanship," David reflects.
A red wine spill once meant replacing the sofa. Now it means removing a cover for cleaning. When your style evolves, a new colour or fabric refreshes the whole room. On selected designs, the covers unzip and machine wash, making everyday care simpler still.

Some of the earliest King Living designs, dating back to the seventies, are brought back to life nearly fifty years on. Recovered, renewed and returned, delivered in the comfort of your own home.
In 1982, one customer made what was set to become a lifetime investment. Over 40 years later, the very same sofa is still at the heart of their living room.
"When we bought the Award Sofa from the original Annandale Showroom, we were so excited to get one of the first modular designs available in Australia," the owner recalls. "Memories are of my children sitting, jumping, and laying on the furniture."
Recovered in 2025, the decision was both practical and sentimental. A well-loved sofa becomes part of the family, and recovering it honours that connection, giving the design a new lease of life.
Exclusive fabrics and European leathers
Whether recovering an existing sofa or customising a new one, a big decision for customers is choosing the finish.
Developed in-house and exclusive to King Living, the Fabric and Leather Collection draws inspiration from the colours and textures of the Australian landscape. Every textile is designed to work together seamlessly across the home, so every pairing feels considered.
From high-performance outdoor fabrics to luxurious weaves and European leathers, every material is chosen for lasting comfort, durability and quality.
Responsibly sourced, many of the fabrics are crafted from sustainable fibres and materials, including recycled plastic bottles. King source leather from two renowned tanneries in Europe, both renowned for their craftsmanship and setting the sustainability benchmark in their industry.
Furniture worth keeping
The most sustainable furniture is furniture you never need to replace. Every King Living design is engineered to perform for decades, reducing waste through longevity.
"Sustainability is of utmost importance to King. Because we have full control over our products, we can ensure they're sustainable, that the components are recyclable, and that the furniture is less likely to end up in landfill,” says David.
For King, this was never just a policy to adopt.
"Long before 'sustainability' was a known word, we were doing it instinctively. As a family business, everything has value and waste should be reduced. There has always been pride in what we create, and an aim to make long-lasting products. It's an extension of our values," says David.
That thinking runs through the whole life of a design.
"Because we design and manufacture our own products, we can choose every single component that goes into them," says David. And nothing is wasted, even at the end.
"At the end of a sofa's life, we can strip it down. The foam gets repurposed, the steel melted down and reused. I always think about the full life cycle, and that's how I've approached everything.”
A cornerstone of growth
From the beginning, King Living has been entirely family-run and vertically integrated, holding complete control over design, manufacture, retail and delivery. It is one of the few furniture companies in the world to do this.
Established when material and operational costs were lower, King invested early in intellectual property and advanced manufacturing. This foundation created a rare balance of quality and value that continues to benefit customers today.
Designed in Australia by an in-house team and manufactured in King’s own facilities, the designs are brought to life through more than 40 showrooms across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, with continued expansion underway.

"The essence of Australian indoor-outdoor lifestyles is in every creation. Our designs are made for living," says David.
Designed to withstand demanding outdoor conditions, premium all-weather materials and advanced drain-through foam technology ensure the designs resist UV, fading, moisture and mildew, holding their colour and texture over time.

“Every award has a story behind it,” says David. "We don't design furniture to fit into trends. We design furniture that will stand the test of time. Over time our designs have evolved and keep improving, and they're better now than they've ever been."
Jasper
The Jasper Sofa has remained a favourite since its 2003 release.
Australia’s most awarded sofa, Jasper is also King’s most loved and most customisable design. Recognised both locally and globally with four Good Design Awards, a prestigious Chicago Good Design Award and a Gold Muse Award, Jasper continues to set the standard for innovation, craftsmanship and enduring style.
"The Jaspers we're making today are the best we've ever made," David says.
1977 Sofa
The same thinking shapes the 1977 Sofa.
“The 1977 Sofa is a contemporary reimagining of the very first sofa created in the seventies. It really brings our design heritage full circle,” says David.
Reengineered for modern living with flexible modularity and machine washable covers, the timeless design has been recognised with a Good Design Award and a Red Dot Design Award.
Heritage Dining Table
King Living’s award-winning design extends into the dining room too.
The brief was to create a 100-year table. Engineered on a fully integrated King Steel Frame and backed by the 25-year steel frame warranty, the Heritage Extendable Dining Table is recognised with a 2024 Australian Good Design Award. The judges stated,
“The Heritage Dining Table features innovative SoftTouch Extension Technology®, allowing it to transform effortlessly between seating capacities. The design combines strong functionality with ease of use, making it a valuable addition to both formal and casual dining settings. The Jury commends its intuitive approach to extendable furniture.”
